The “Queen of Ranchera Music,” Aida Cuevas will pay tribute to one of Juan Gabriel – Mexico’s most prolific and beloved songwriters. This concert opens The Soraya season on Saturday, September 29 at 8pm and marks the West Coast debut of Totalmente Juan Gabriel, a 23-city tribute tour to the beloved artist who passed away in 2016.
“We are proud that our season Opening Night is dedicated to a great Mexican artist and more so, to our loyal audience who has supported our Hecho en las Americas series for the past three years,” said Soraya Executive Director Thor Steingraber. “We first contacted the Juan Gabriel estate two years ago about creating a concert like this. With Aida Cuevas as our partner, this concert came into being as a testament to Los Angeles as a hub of culture for the Mexican American community.”
Over her 42-year music career, Cuevas has sung many hits composed by Gabriel, and here she revisits audience favorites such as Te Lo Pido Por Favor, Te Sigo Amando, and La Diferencia. She will be joined by Mexico City-based Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán, with special guests on requinto, accordion, percussion, and keyboards, along with the CSUN Symphony Orchestra.
Cuevas, the only artist authorized by the Juan Gabriel estate to record and tour his music, sang at his memorial as the nation mourned the passing of one of their musical idols. Her latest release, Totalmente Juan Gabriel Vol. II, is the second of five CD installments in which she pays tribute to the legendary singer and songwriter. Juan Gabriel produced two albums for Cuevas, 1983’s Aida Cuevas Canta a Juan Gabriel and 1985’s Exitos. Cuevas became the first female singer in the traditional mariachi genre to win an American GRAMMY® when she was honored at the 2018 awards for “Best Regional Mexican Music Album.”
