San Fernando Police Department (SFPD) Chief Fabian Valdez described a traffic accident on Monday, July 15, as “devastating.”
Yadira Caamal, 45, a San Fernando resident, died in a two-car collision that occurred at 8:25 p.m. at Mission Boulevard and Hollister Street.
Three people including a juvenile were in the crash. The juvenile did not sustain life threatening injuries. One other person remains in the hospital in critical condition, said SFPD Lt. CJ Chiasson.

The accident involved two cars, a black Silverado truck and a white Audi. One of the cars veered into a telephone pole, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. One occupant was stuck and had to be freed from their vehicle.
“This vehicular manslaughter case is currently under investigation by San Fernando detectives,” said Chiasson.
Following the crash, San Fernando residents posted their concerns about speeding and the lack of police patrolling the city’s streets.
Chief Valdez responded with the following statement:
“Our heartfelt condolences to the family of Yadira Caamal of San Fernando, who tragically lost her life in a traffic collision on July 15. This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder for motorists to drive safely, watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, and slow down when traveling through San Fernando.
As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public and traffic safety, the San Fernando Police Department will be reallocating Department resources to include increased traffic enforcement activities. These efforts, in alignment with one of several Department goals for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, include conducting DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols for DUI enforcement beginning in August. Additionally, the Department is working to reach targeted staffing levels and will introduce three newly hired police officers at the Aug. 5, 2024, City Council meeting, setting the stage for added police resources to meet the needs of San Fernando.”
Chief Valdez said he supports community engagement and encourages residents to voice their concerns at upcoming public meetings he is planning with his officers.
