Food 4 Less/Foods Co. and Ralphs Grocery Company presented a $30,000 donation to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) to support the nonprofit organization’s mission to meet the immediate needs of individuals and families and provides assistance to access opportunities to thrive.
The ceremonial check presentation took place at MEND’s food distribution center in Sylmar. State Sen. Caroline Menjivar, presented the check on behalf of Ralphs, Food 4 Less and The Kroger Co Zero Hunger Zero Waste Foundation.
“Having personally witnessed MEND’s impact, as an employee during the height of the pandemic, I know that every program, donation and volunteer effort not only meets immediate needs, they also restore dignity and hope,” said Menjivar. “Today’s gift from Ralphs, Food 4 Less and the Kroger Foundation carries that same spirit forward, ensuring MEND can continue its vital work of nurturing families and strengthening our community.”
Founded in 1971 by Ed and Carolyn Rose, then a young couple, moved by the poverty they witnessed in the San Fernando Valley, they worked out of their home collecting and distributing food, clothing and furniture to local families in need. As a grassroots effort supported by their church community at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, word spread, other families joined the effort, and together they began calling themselves MEND.
“For the families who come through our doors, consistency matters,” said Janet Marinaccio, president and CEO of MEND. “Support like this helps keep our shelves stocked, our programs running and our promise to the community intact – that no one is turned away when they need help most. We’re grateful to Ralphs, Food 4 Less and the Kroger Foundation for standing with our neighbors in a very real, tangible way.”
In 1976, MEND was formally established as a nonprofit organization. By the mid-1980s, it had found its permanent home in Pacoima.
MEND’s programs, including their Foodbank, provide essential food, services, and support to thousands of families in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. This donation helps ensure continued access to nutritious food and programs that strengthen the capacity of families to thrive.
“Partnering with MEND allows us to make a direct impact in the communities we serve,” said Salvador Ramirez, head of communications and public affairs, Ralphs and Food 4 Less/Foods Co. “We are proud to support their important work and to help families access the resources they need to succeed.”
