LAUSD se Une a Otros Distritos Escolares, Estados y Presenta Demanda Contra Empresas de Redes Sociales por Daño a los Niños

LOS ÁNGELES (CNS) – El 20 de marzo, el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Los Ángeles (LAUSD) presentó una demanda contra las principales empresas de redes sociales por su presunto papel en alimentar una crisis de salud mental juvenil y perturbar el entorno educativo de los estudiantes de Los Ángeles.

El distrito se une a cientos de distritos escolares, ciudades, condados y fiscales generales estatales de todo el país que emprenden acciones legales para responsabilizar a las empresas de redes sociales por el daño que sus plataformas han infligido a los niños.

Como se detalla en la demanda, los educadores, consejeros y administradores de LAUSD están enfrentando niveles sin precedentes de ansiedad entre los estudiantes, depresión, insomnio, autolesiones, ideación suicida, trastornos alimentarios, ciberacoso, sextorsión y exposición excesiva a contenidos extremos y explotadores, gran parte de lo cual es amplificado y monetizado por las características de diseño de las redes sociales.

La Ciudad de San Fernando Presentó ‘Información y Conversación Sobre Inmigración’

La investigación subraya la magnitud del problema causado por la ineficaz verificación de edad, advertencias, controles parentales e informes de material de abuso sexual infantil en las plataformas. Hallazgos presentados por el Proyecto SMASH (Social Media Safety Project) —una colaboración entre la Organization for Social Media Safety y la UCLA School of Education and Information Studies— revelaron que, entre más de 14,000 estudiantes encuestados a nivel nacional:

– 53% reportaron usar redes sociales más de cinco horas al día, con 20% reportando nueve horas o más;

– 46% reportaron haber sido víctimas de ciberacoso;

– 81% reportaron exposición a discurso de odio, a menudo relacionado con la raza, el género o la religión;

– Los estudiantes también reportaron exposición a contenido relacionado con drogas, contenido sobre trastornos alimentarios y esquemas de sextorsión vinculados a la autolesión y al suicidio.

En junio de 2024, para abordar estos problemas, la Junta de Educación de LAUSD adoptó una resolución que restringe el uso de teléfonos celulares y redes sociales por parte de los estudiantes durante el día escolar, citando investigaciones que vinculan el uso excesivo con mayor estrés, ansiedad, depresión, interrupciones del sueño, agresión e ideación suicida.

La demanda del distrito se alinea con esfuerzos legales más amplios en California y a nivel nacional para abordar lo que muchos funcionarios han descrito como una emergencia de salud mental juvenil vinculada a las características de las redes sociales de las partes demandadas, las desinformaciones sobre la seguridad y las fallas para advertir sobre los peligros de sus plataformas para los jóvenes.
